      Calvin Ferdinand Zuehlke, age 89, was born on March 23, 1926, the son of Albert and Ethel (Edes) Zuehlke. He graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1944. After graduation, he served in the United States Army Air Force and Infantry from July 1944 to August 1946. Calvin married Nancy Kaercher on August 1, 1949. He graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College with a BA in Industrial Arts and Physical Education. Calvin taught Industrial Arts for 34 years in Warren, MN, New London, MN, St. Peter, MN and 28 of those years in Worthington, MN. He retired from public school teaching in 1986. In 1967, Calvin received the Teacher of the Year in Worthington and was a top 10 finalist for the State of MN Teacher of the Year. Calvin was passionate about public education, students, learning, and teachers. He was a life member of MEA, NEA, Industrial Arts Association, and active in the Uniserve (MEA).

      Calvin was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Kiwanis. He was also an active member of First Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and on the church council for many years. Calvin served on the MN State Art Board and was the United Fund Chairman. He did stand-up comedy and public speaking for many years. He loved to talk to people and had a joke for every opportunity. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, dancing with Nancy at the Coliseum and his children and their spouses. He loved the State of Minnesota and its seasons. He taught drivers training in Worthington, refereed football and basketball for twenty five years. He loved America and God and serving them both. Calvin died on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center in Worthington, MN.

      Calvin is survived by his wife, Nancy of Worthington, MN; three daughters, Jessica Zuehlke (Jim Stowell) of Red Wing, MN, Sally Zuehlke of Worthington, MN, and Jill Zuehlke (Sam DeHoyos) of San Angelo, TX; one son, John Zuehlke (Erin Earl) of Maple Grove, MN; sister, Shirley (Herbert) Bjerke of Maryland; numerous nephews and nieces, and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Florence Zuehlke, and brother, Sherman Zuehlke.

      Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Nancy Larson officiating. Casket bearers will be Bruce Wendland, John Van Ede, Curt Pearson, Todd Wietzema, Wayne Klumper, and David Haugen. Honorary bearer will be Brian Korthals. Burial will be at a later date in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

      In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Cal’s charities: Veteran’s organizations, First Lutheran Church stained glass windows fund and Native American Children’s Home.

      Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
