Obituary for Betty Lou Baumgard

Brewster, MN

     Betty L. Baumgard, 87, was born September 13, 1925, in St. James, Minnesota. She passed away April 17, 2013, at her home in Brewster, Minnesota.
     Betty was the daughter of Virgil and Mabel (Miller) Smith. In 1939 she was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Brewster. Betty graduated from Brewster High School in 1943. She was a member of the Brewster Drum and Bugle Corp. In 1947 Betty graduated with a nursing degree from Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. She started her career in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and was a care giver all of her life.
     Betty Lou Smith was united in marriage to Marvin E. Baumgard on October 7, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was a loving and devoted farm wife.
     She was very active in the community and volunteered with Red Cross nurse, PTA, 4-H, The Achievement Center, and the Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid. Betty and Marvin enjoyed bowling, golfing, wintering in Arizona, and socializing with their friends. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, loved to bake, and enjoyed time on her computer playing games or connecting with family and friends.
     In 1973 Betty, at the age of 47, discovered that she was adopted and realized that she had a large family.
     She will always be remembered as a faithful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 
     Betty is survived by her children Cheryl (Jim) Weinandt, Windom; Jay (Beth) Baumgard, Brewster; Tom (Judy) Baumgard, Windom; Tim (Julie) Baumgard, Brewster;  Jon (Cindy) Baumgard, Avon; and Bruce Baumgard and special friend Mayuree Sompamitwong, Worthington. Eight grandchildren, Angela, Damon, Heath, Meggin, Amy, Bryan, April, and Mary, and six great-grandchildren, Kalli, Kaitlyn, Keagen, Lauren, Layten, and Alivia. She is also survived by siblings, Janet, David, Peggy, and half-siblings Carol, Beverly, Jean, Sharon, Roxie, Roger, and Ernie, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was proceeded in death by her loving husband (her knight in shining armor); biological parents, Helga and Ernest Engelking and adoptive parents; one grandson Mark; three brothers, Douglas, Wally, Donald; one sister Donna; half-brothers; and half-sisters.  
     Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster, Minnesota, with Rev. David P. McDonald officiating.  Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Brewster.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also on Monday, April 22, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster, MN.
