Obituary for Bert Steen

Ocheyedan, IA

Bert Steen, age 93, was born on May 14, 1923, in Wilson Township, Osceola County, IA, the son of George Sr. and Jennie (Borchers) Steen. He was the 10th of 11 siblings. Bert attended Wilson #6 Country School. Bert lost his father at the age of nine. By the time he was 14, he was responsible for running the farm for his mother. Bert married Edna Ferguson on January 7, 1948, on the family farm. Working side by side, they took over the farm raising crops, hogs, and dairy and feeder cattle. Bert enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time. After he retired, he helped his son on the farm. He loved to combine corn; he remembered when he harvested one row, one ear at a time – now its eight rows at once. He continued to do this until he was 88. Bert and Edna spent several winters in south Texas. They loved to spend their summers attending polka fests and traveling with the polka bands across the country. Bert died on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Country View Manor in Sibley, IA.
Bert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edna; daughter, Cynthia (John) Giles of Chino Valley, AR; son, Norman (Linda) Steen of Ocheyedan, IA; four granddaughters, Robin (Paul) Collins, Suzanne Giles, Lisa (Matt Jaworski) Groene, and Laura (Lance Perrin) Dykema; two great grandsons, Sebastian Dykema and Ryan Collins; two great granddaughters, Deborah Giles and Madeline Jaworski, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, son-in-law, David Rachal, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 1:30 p.m., at the Ocheyedan Senior Activity Center in Ocheyedan, IA.
