Obituary for Bernard Knapp Shepherd

Bernard Knapp Shepherd, 99, died on Friday, November 10, 2017, at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne, Minnesota. He was born December 22, 1917, at the family home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to William and Clara Crandall Shepherd. He was married to Amanda Kittleson on December 22, 1948 at Louisberg, Minnesota. He and Amanda were longtime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. At the time of his death, he was a member of American Lutheran Church in Worthington.

Several years after his birth, his family returned to Anoka, Minnesota. Following graduation from high school in 1936, he left home to work in the grocery business in Chicago. He returned to Anoka and was employed at Federal Cartridge until he entered the military service in 1942. He served in the US Army Signal Corps during World War II including stations in England, Iceland, Belgium, and France. After his discharge, he attended business school and operated his own grocery store in St. Paul for several years. He left the grocery business and worked for W.T. Grant in St. Louis Park for several years. In 1956 he began working for the Post Office until he retired in 1979. Bernie and Amanda moved to the Meadows in Worthington in 2006. He continued to live there following her death in 2012 until he entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Shepherd, Dorothy Lowman and Marjory Yutzy as well as by his brothers, Woodrow and Stephen. He is survived by sons Mark (Marcia) of Worthington and Gregory (Mary) of Coral Gables, Florida; grandson John; brother Paul of Coon Rapids, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was very grateful for the care he received and the friendships he made during the last years of his life at the Minnesota Veterans Home. Visitation will take place at American Lutheran Church in Worthington from 10 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017 to be followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Fort Snelling will take place at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the American Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or to the Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne.
