Worthington, MN

     Barbara Ann Burnside, age 82, of Worthington, MN, was born on June 9, 1929, in Fairmont, MN, the youngest girl of nine children to Jake and Geneva (Peterson) Wilson. She grew up on a farm near Round Lake, MN, where she graduated from high school. Barbara married Dale Burnside on May 1, 1953, at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington and later had one son, Carter. While Dale served in the Air Force in Amarillo, TX, she taught there for 2 years. She attended Waldorf College, Buena Vista College, Drake University, University of Iowa and graduated from Morningside College with a BS degree in teaching. She later taught in Iowa at Lake Park, Excelsior, Bronson, and Sioux City schools for a total of 41 years of experience. She was active in several organizations such as PEO, ADK, Sioux City Art Center, United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, CMN and AAUW and various others.
     She enjoyed reading, walking, shopping, traveling to various parts of the world, her grandchildren, and was dedicated to serving the church in lay ministry.
     On November 21, 2009, Barbara married Howard McCausland and moved to Worthington. They enjoyed each other’s company, family, friends, and traveling south to Texas. Barbara died on Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
     Barbara is survived by her husband, Howard of Worthington, son, Carter (Karen) Burnside and three grandchildren, Cassie, Sherise and Jake of Fremont, NE; two step daughters, Debra (Bob) Horne of Fulda, MN and Barbara (Mark) Opsal of Farmington, MN; four step grandchildren; two sisters, Lola Mae Geisendorfer and Julane Coyer, both of Worthington, and one brother, Rev. Woodrow Wilson of Lincoln, NE.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale, parents, sister, Carmen and brothers, Stan, Gordon, Doug and Gerald. 
     Memorial services will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Gordon J. Orde and Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park, IA.
     A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Sioux City, IA.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington, MN.

Family requests memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Worthington or Grace United Methodist in Sioux City, IA.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
