Obituary for Arvid Milo Nickel

Arvid “Bud” Milo Nickel, age 97, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN. Arvid was born on December 3, 1921, in the farm home near Reading, MN, the son of George and Freida Nickel. He attended school in Reading and finished his last two years in Worthington after the closing of the Reading school. Arvid was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He was a charter member of the Worthington FFA.
After graduation, he worked on the family farm with his father. On February 27, 1948, he married Pauline Soderholm at the First Covenant Church in Worthington. They made their home near Reading, where he farmed with his brother-in-law, Gordon Soderholm until his retirement in 1983. During that time, he was also a Pioneer seed salesman for many years. During retirement, he was active and loved helping neighbors with farming. He also enjoyed being able to do the lawn mowing for his grandsons on their acreages. Another great joy was the things he was able to do for his three grandsons and later on especially with his great grandchildren. After retirement, they continued to live on the family farm until 2001 when they moved to Worthington where they resided until moving into the Meadows.
Arvid was a lifelong member of the First Covenant Church after his marriage. When the new church was built in 1960, he along with many other church members spent many days assisting in the construction of the church. Arvid was also a long time usher at the church and a trustee.
Arvid and his wife Pauline were able to take several trips over the years from being a Pioneer seed salesman. One of his greatest joys was being able to spend time fishing with his neighbor and friend Les Heeringa. They spent many hours out in the boat and at the family cabin on Bloody Lake.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Pauline of Worthington, MN; sons, Jim Nickel of Worthington and Donald (Wendy) Nickel of Kiester, MN; grandsons, Trevor (Erin) of Worthington and Chad (Sarah) of Reading, MN; granddaughter-in-law, Latina Nickel of Worthington, and great grandchildren, Kya, Colby, Kory, Jaden, MaKenna, Riley, Spenser, Sadie, Peyton, and Tayler all of Worthington. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law, Deb Nickel, and grandson, Jeffrey Nickel.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Memorial services will be held on Monday, April 29, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Living Waters Covenant Church (First Covenant Church) in Worthington, MN, with Pastor John Stewart officiating. Private family burial will be held prior to the service in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to Living Water Covenant Church or Worthington Hockey Association.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
