Obituary for AnnMae Julia Johnson

Issaquah, WA

AnnMae Julia (Groenewold) Johnson, 81, passed away on February 12, 2017, with her husband at her side. AnnMae was born on May 5, 1935, on her family farm in Rushmore, Minnesota. She attended Worthington High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and her Master’s Degree at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.
On July 31, 1961, AnnMae married William C. Johnson, of San Diego, California. The couple lived in California and Illinois before settling in Minnesota, where they lived until retirement. AnnMae spent her entire career as a public school teacher, pioneering innovative practices such as televised distance learning and alternative curricula. She is the author of two books on education and one book on the immigrant experience, based on the lives and experiences of her relatives. She also co-authored a book on the possibilities of life in the future, together with her husband.
In addition to her passion for teaching, AnnMae loved to travel, and visited more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America. In her later years, she spent enormous time and energy with her grandchildren, passing on her love of art and reading. AnnMae and Bill moved to Portland, Oregon after retirement, to enjoy the milder weather, beautiful landscapes, and time with Karl’s family. Three years ago, they moved to Issaquah, Washington, where they also enjoyed the trails and views of the Pacific Northwest.
She leaves behind her loving and faithful husband, Bill after 55 years of marriage; her daughter Sara and son in law Mark, of Stacy, Minnesota; her daughter Martha and son in law Peter, currently living in Bogota, Colombia; and son Karl and daughter in law Trista, of Issaquah, Washington. AnnMae’s seven grandchildren, Alicia, Alex, Andrew, Erika, Carter, Kalin and Rowen will treasure the memories of their grandmother and the lessons she taught them. AnnMae was preceded in death by her brother Robert and her sister Darleen.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., at the same church where she was married, First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, with Pastor Dan Dettman presiding. She will be buried at the Sunset Rest cemetery in Rushmore, joining her grandparents, parents, brother and sister. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Wheaton College Scholarship Fund (in memory of AnnMae Groenewold Johnson).
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
