Obituary for Allen Lloyd Hurlbut

Allen Lloyd Hurlbut of Worthington, MN passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Minneapolis VA hospital with his family at his side.

Al was born on October 10, 1940 to Fred & Rose (Wagner) Hurlbut in Tyler, MN. His family later moved to Wilmont, MN where he attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School and Church.

In his younger years, Al worked on the family farm by Wilmont and also helped set bowling pins at the family business in Wilmont. Al was adventurous throughout his teenage years, which led him to travel out west to Colorado and California. In the spring of 1960 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served as security in Japan, and saw action in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Allen was honorably discharged from the military in 1964. After returning home from the military, he worked at the Stillwater State Prison and for Montgomery Ward in Minneapolis.

In 1976, Al moved to Worthington and established the “A&T Tap”. He also met and married his bride, Brenda. Al & Brenda enjoyed 22 years with the family business, supporting numerous community events and leagues, including the annual Turkey Day, Chamber of Commerce, gymnastics, the hockey association, softball, fast-pitch, pool, darts, and bowling. Al loved competition and excelled at bowling (he even bowled a perfect game), golf, and pool. He also passionately followed the Twins, Vikings, and pro golf.

Al loved his family dearly and enjoyed many family vacations in northern Minnesota, his time at the lake house, and spending time with his friends and family.

In early February 2019, Al entered the Sioux Falls VA hospital where he was diagnosed with a blood infection that spread to his heart. He needed further care and was transferred to the Minneapolis VA hospital where he was cared for with much compassion. During this time, he was blessed to have his family always at his side. Upon his passing, Allen received the “Walk of Honor” through the halls of the VA, garnering respect from staff and civilians, and salutes from all veterans.

Al is survived by his bride of 40 years, Brenda, son Dustin (Katye), and daughters Jodi (daughter of Cheryl Stevenson), Saundra (Brian) and Cassie Rose (Aaron). Allen loved his four grandchildren, Dietrick, Desiree, Drake and Decklan; two brothers Rich Hurlbut (Worthington) and Dale (Karen) Hurlbut, (Lincoln, CA); and one sister Margaret (Mike) Vosburgh, (Worthington). Al also enjoyed his extended family including aunt Lorraine Schafer, 12 brother & sister-in-laws, 32 nieces & nephews, 33 great nieces & nephews, and their fun-loving family dog Hershey.

Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Rose Hurlbut, father-in-law Alvin Larson, brother-in-law Jerry Larson, great nephew baby Ty Schreier, and ex-wife Cheryl Stevenson.
