Obituary for Allen Dale Gruis

Allen Dale Gruis, 62, a lifelong resident of Worthington, MN, breathed his last breath on earth on February 14, 2018 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage. Born on June 8, 1955, he was preceded in death by his parents Vivian Aielts Gruis and Henry Benjamin Gruis. He is survived by his daughters Jodie (Paul) Ryder and Jean (Jason) Johnson, granddaughter Skyla Rautenkranz, step grandson Dalton Johnson, and many other relatives and close friends.
He began his working life farming with his dad. Later he became a janitor in the Worthington public schools, where he gained the skills and certifications that made him excel at his job. His next career move was to road construction, working for Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye. He often said it made him so proud to ride on the roads and highways that he helped build.
Allen lived big and had great passions. For 40 years, he drove a Harley to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis every August where he made friends from around the world. With his lifelong friend Darrel Oberloh, he hunted and fished in the U.S. and Canada – and he had the trophies to prove it. Closer to home, he enjoyed socializing at the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The outdoorsman also enjoyed his home and carefully arranged his life memories throughout his house and cared for a wide array of house plants.
He had many companion dogs in his life. His last dog, Sparky, was faithful and with him at the end of Allen’s life. Sparky quickly found a new home with Allen’s daughter Jean, her family, and their two dogs.
Allen made friends easily and kept them by being reliable and available in good times and bad. His friends returned that commitment, especially in the last two years of his life when he suffered from a complex injury and a debilitating illness. His friends and relatives came through for him as he had come through for so many of them. The family is grateful to all of them, especially to his cousins Lori Mejia and Marilyn Nienkerk who led the challenging and ever-changing healthcare and business management efforts.
Allen’s family will welcome relatives and friends to a celebration of his life at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Rushmore, MN, at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, February 19, 2018, with Pastor Paul Snyder officiating. Burial will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Loren Gruis, Darrel Oberloh, Charley Johnson, "Magoo" Kevin Boyer Sr., Kevin Boyer Jr., Greg Gruis, Brad Gruis, and "Froggy" Krogmann. Honorary bearers will be Kirk Schnickter and Tom Tracy. Visitation will be the day before at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington on Sunday, February 18, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. As Allen wished, a celebration at the Eagles Club will be held at a later date to be announced.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
