Obituary for Kern Schwartz

In Loving Memory
Kern Schwartz, DVM

June 3, 1934 to August 20, 2019

Kern Schwartz, age 85, died on August 20, 2019 after spending a relaxing time with friends in the beauty of northern Minnesota.

Kern was born on June 3, 1934 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota to Roy and Blossom Schwartz. He attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and achieved a degree in veterinary medicine. On November 24, 1956, he married Jean Schoelkopf and they moved to Worthington, Minnesota in 1958 where Kern began his veterinary practice.

Doc Schwartz served as a practicing veterinarian for 50 years first with the Worthington Veterinary Clinic and then with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. He knew every back country road and enjoyed his daily interactions with farmers and their animals.

Worthington was an important community to Kern and his family, and he volunteered his time by serving on the Worthington School Board and Water and Light Commission. He also attended the Tuesday noon Kiwanis Club for over half a century and participated in their numerous activities.

Through the Worthington Woodcrafters, he took great joy in creating wooden toys to be donated as part of the annual Worthington Christmas Basket distribution. He was a member of the Minnesota Clock Guild and had an active social life with a community of friends and a weekly routine that included coffee, lunches and cards.

A longtime, active member of American Lutheran Church, Kern was involved with the building committee and scholarship program. Faith was always paramount in his life, as was seen through his generous actions and kind words.

He was an active outdoors man and engaged his children in hunting and fishing. Kern was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the Heron Lake Duck Club. Many mornings were spent hunting on Honker Hill with his family, friends, and beloved black labradors.

Kern enjoyed his recumbent bicycle and could often be seen riding with friends around Lake Okabena. He also assisted on RAGBRAI with the Letsche Bike Shop road crew for many years.

Through his extended family, he learned to geocache which complimented his love of traveling. No destination was too far or out of the way when he was driving his red truck. He completed a 9,000 mile trek with family to Alaska in June and was excited to log a geocache above the Arctic Circle.

Kern was a lifelong learner and loved to share experiences with others through travel, opera and his wood and metal workshop. He and his family handcrafted Shaker boxes together and his latest pursuit was making round rocks. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his family and he will be dearly missed.

Kern was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents, brothers Bill and Rex, and sisters Mae and Mary. He is survived by his children Todd (Nancy) Schwartz of Urbandale, IA; Paul (Kathy) Schwartz of Saratoga Springs, NY; Amy (Tom) Letsche of Cherokee, IA; and Sarah (Brian) Christensen of Sugar Land, TX; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at the American Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Andersen officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Cemetery.

Visitation will be at American Lutheran Church in Worthington from 5-7 p.m. Monday, August 26, and also from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Memorial gifts will be distributed to Camp Olson YMCA and Worthington community groups.
